💄 Oil + pigmentHow to remove ballpoint pen ink stains

Oil-based ink · dissolve with alcohol and transfer it out

Ballpoint ink is an oil-based ink with dye dissolved in it, so water and detergent don't do much. It shows up often on dress-shirt pockets, kids' clothes and fabric sofas. The principle is to dissolve the ink with alcohol and transfer it into a paper towel placed underneath.

🔬 Why this order works

The dye in ballpoint ink dissolves readily in alcohol. The trick is to put a paper towel underneath and dab from the back so the dissolved ink drains downward rather than spreading sideways. Hairspray used to be used for the same reason, the alcohol, but today's products contain less alcohol and work less well.

🧺 Step by step

Tap a step when it's done to tick it off.

👕 By fabric

⚪ White cotton & linen

Alcohol → detergent → oxygen bleach for any remaining mark.

🎨 Colors & synthetics

Test first that the alcohol doesn't dissolve the garment's dye too, then use it.

🧶 Wool, silk & cashmere

Alcohol tends to leave marks on silk and wool, so take them to a dry cleaner.

🚫 Don't

  • Rubbing with water — the ink spreads widely.
  • Using the dryer with ink remaining.
  • Running the washer with a pen inside — it spreads over the whole load.

⏳ If it has already dried

Old ballpoint marks often dissolve out with alcohol too. Soak with alcohol for 5 minutes, then dab.

💡 Tip

If a pen burst in the washing machine, don't dry the wet laundry; treat each item with alcohol and wash again. Wipe ink off the drum's rubber door seal with alcohol too.

❓ Common questions

What about gel pen or water-based pen stains?

Water-based pen ink dissolves in water, so cold water and liquid detergent remove most of it. Gel pens contain pigment, so if something remains after detergent, try alcohol.

I got ballpoint on a leather sofa.

Alcohol can damage leather's surface coating, so a dedicated leather cleaner is the safe choice. The method on this page is for fabric.
